Sound of a living tree. June 2008
Two hanging pieces of wet rotten wood give the sound of a living tree. The two pieces of wood represent the visual form of sound.
In the sculpture two speakers are responsible for the sound.
The sound is recorded from a living tree in the forest. This sound is transported via a long small course to a hollow open space at the end off the wood.
The wood has the tendency to absorb the sound. and to change the resonance contrary to the hollow space that strengthens the sound. This creates a sound which really seems to come from the inside of the tree.
The wood is kept wet to preserve her form, scent, and appearance. Instead of conserving it by drying and accordingly oiling, staining or lacquering it rots.
In the end it decays, by the weakened structure of the fibres in the wood. During that time beautiful forms, scents and colours of fungus will leave their marks on the wood.
Geluid van een levende boom.
Uit twee hangende stukken nat, verrot hout komt het geluid van een levende boom. In de twee stukken hout, waarvan de vorm zo bewerkt is dat ze een visuele representatie voor geluid vormen, zitten twee speakers waaruit het geluid komt.
Het geluid is opgenomen van een levende boom uit het bos. Dit geluid wordt via een lange smalle gang geleid naar een holle open ruimte in het sculptuur, aan het einde van het hout. Het hout heeft de neiging het geluid te absorberen en de resonantie te veranderen in tegenstelling tot de holle ruimte die het geluid weer versterkt. Zo ontstaat er een geluid dat werkelijk uit het binnenste van de boom lijkt te komen.
Het hout wordt nat gehouden om haar vorm, geur en uiterlijk te behouden. in plaats van het te conserveren (dood te maken) door het te drogen en vervolgens te oliën, beitsen of lakken. Het hout rot verder tot het uiteindelijk door de verzwakte structuur van de vezels in het hout uit elkaar valt, wat geenszins zonde is, want tot die tijd zullen er prachtige vormen, geuren en kleuren van schimmels achter elkaar op het hout verschijnen en sporen achterlaten.
